The Fayetteville City Council convened for their monthly work session on April 1, 2024, at the City Hall Council Chambers to address various matters pertinent to the city's strategic plan.

Mayor Mitch Colvin commenced the meeting with an invocation led by Councilmember Derrick Thompson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

During the session, Councilmember D.J. Haire motioned for a closed session on a personnel issue, which received unanimous approval. The agenda was later adjusted with motions and discussions, including the addition of the "Community Safety Summit" topic.

Assistant City Manager Jodi Phelps presented details about the upcoming Community Safety Summit, scheduled for April 30 at Fayetteville State University. The council unanimously approved a directive for staff to provide further information before the event.

One significant discussion revolved around the 5-Year Review of Project Homerun with the Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Michelle Skinner, the Woodpeckers' General Manager, presented positive statistics about the team's impact on the community, which was approved unanimously by the council.

Various other topics were deliberated upon, such as competitive compensation for city employees, the feasibility of a Murchison Road Grocery Co-operative, and the annual action plan for community development programs. Each discussion provided valuable insights for the council members.

Councilmember Thompson's proposal to address the storage or parking of heavy trucks garnered consensus, as did Councilmember Brenda McNair's requests regarding free bus fares for elderly and disabled residents and exploring the potential for an amusement park in Fayetteville.

However, a resolution in support of immigrant communities in Fayetteville proposed by Councilmember Benavente did not achieve consensus, highlighting differing opinions among the council members.

The meeting concluded at 6:30 p.m., with the next City Council Regular Meeting scheduled for April 8 at 6:30 p.m. The public can access meeting agendas, supporting documents, and minutes on the city's website for further information.
