Fayetteville City Council met on March 4 for their monthly work session, focusing on strategic city matters. The meeting commenced with an invocation by Council Member Brenda McNair and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Jensen.
Council Member McNair moved to approve the agenda, seconded by Council Member Derrick Thompson, which passed unanimously. Various items were discussed during the session, including a presentation by John Easterling on the State Action Plan 2024. Council Member Mario Benavente proposed funding for an Office of Community Safety, but the motion did not receive a second.
The Council reviewed the FY25 Strategic Planning Retreat report, with Council Member Deno Hondros moving to accept the report unanimously. Fountainworks presented the Second Quarter FY24 Report, and the Downtown Nighttime Landscaping - Lighting Plan Proposal was accepted. Additionally, maintenance responsibilities for stormwater control measures were shifted to property owners.
Updates were provided by Cumberland HealthNet on the Day Resource Center, and Mayor Mitch Colvin introduced initiatives for new homeowners and expanded down payment assistance eligibility. Council Member Lynne Greene proposed a Towing Ordinance, while Council Member Deno Hondros raised the topic of Downtown Parking.
The meeting concluded with a special presentation by Attorney Jaelyn Miller from Emancipate North Carolina on alternative responses to mental health. The next City Council Regular Meeting is scheduled for March 14 at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, City Hall, and will be broadcast live.
