FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - City offices in Fayetteville have closed early today due to inclement weather. The decision was made in light of the severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds, and possible tornadoes forecasted for the area.

Among the affected services is the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation Centers, which closed at 2 p.m. The Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) Center and their bus operations will also close at 4 p.m. Additionally, there will be a delay in solid waste collections, with normal operations resuming on January 10.

Specific neighborhoods experiencing delays in waste collection include Devonwood, Valley Forge, and Lakeshore. Yard waste collection will also be delayed in the following areas: Arboretum Place, Bryce Creek Lane, Cotton Drive, Alloway Place, Kirkwood Place, Kirkwood Road, Forest Creek Drive, Overton Place, Baker Street, Shadow Oak Drive, Highgrove Court, and Cliffdale Road between South McPherson and Morganton Road.

Despite the disruptions, recycling collections will continue as scheduled. The Fayetteville Regional Airport Administration offices will close at 2 p.m., and travelers are advised to contact their airlines directly for any inquiries regarding travel and flight schedules.

However, essential services such as law enforcement and fire will continue to operate normally. Mayor Mitch Colvin emphasized the importance of safety in light of the impending severe weather. He stated, "I urge everyone to prioritize safety as our City and surrounding community faces a significant risk of high winds and potential for flooding as we face impending severe weather. Our city is committed to ensuring your well-being, and our dedicated City Staff will continue to provide excellent service now, and throughout every emergency. Stay informed, stay prepared, and together, we will navigate this storm with resilience and strength."

City offices and services are expected to resume regular hours on January 10. The National Weather Service has also warned of another storm system that may bring additional heavy rain and strong gusty winds on Friday night into Saturday.

For any further updates, residents are encouraged to visit the City's website and social media platforms.
