McFadyen Drive in Fayetteville, North Carolina is set to close for maintenance on January 8th. The closure is necessary to perform maintenance on the Devonwood Lower Dam, as required by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ). The maintenance activities will include the installation of a chimney drain at the downstream toe of the dam and clearing vegetation prior to impounding water.

In preparation for the road closure, message boards have been installed to alert motorists. The city of Fayetteville has also provided alternate access routes for points beyond the closure. Motorists can use Tollhouse Drive, located half a mile west on Morganton Road, or Evanston Street, three-quarters of a mile west on Morganton Road.

To complete the work on the dam, the city of Fayetteville has contracted with Morgan Trucking & General Construction Inc. These maintenance activities are necessary to ensure that the Devonwood Lower Dam is in compliance with current state codes and standards as mandated by the NCDEQ.

The Devonwood Lower Dam and McFadyen Drive were both damaged during Hurricane Matthew in October 2016. Since then, the city has taken steps to stabilize the dam, construct a new spillway, and rebuild McFadyen Drive. These construction efforts were completed in October 2022.

The closure of McFadyen Drive for maintenance is crucial to ensure the long-term safety and functionality of the Devonwood Lower Dam. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly and use the designated alternate access routes during the closure period.

In the words of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, "These maintenance activities are required to ensure the dam is in compliance with current state codes and standards."

With the upcoming closure and maintenance, the city of Fayetteville is taking proactive steps to prioritize the safety and integrity of its infrastructure.
