The Fayetteville City Council convened on January 2, 2024, for their monthly work session at City Hall Council Chambers. The meeting began with an invocation by Council Member Derrick Thompson, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
During the work session, several important matters were discussed. One of the key topics was the proposed text amendments to chapter 30 - Unified Development Ordinance. The Planning and Zoning Division presented these amendments, which aim to update the city's regulations to reflect modern development standards and community preferences. It was agreed upon by the City Council to move all the proposed text amendments to the City's Planning Commission for review.
The Solid Waste Division also gave a presentation on Solid Waste Acceptable Containers. The Council reached a consensus to continue using the accepted containerized methods for Yard Waste Collection as outlined in the current Solid Waste Ordinance.
Another significant update came from Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation regarding unaccompanied minors in city facilities. The Council agreed to have the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission provide recommendations for an age limit on minors when not accompanied by an adult.
Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Jensen presented the Policy Committee's suggestions on changing the start times for council meetings. It was proposed to move council work sessions to 2 p.m., dinner meetings to 5:30 p.m., and regular business council meetings to 6:30 p.m. This proposal will be discussed further during a regular council meeting.
During the work session, Council Member D.J. Haire requested a review of Cumberland County's policies concerning the distance of vape shops in residential neighborhoods and schools, particularly in low-income areas. The Council agreed to move forward with this request.
However, Council Member Courtney Banks-McLaughlin's request to censure Mayor Mitch Colvin and Council Member Mario Benavente did not receive consensus from the Council.
The meeting adjourned at 7:18 p.m., and the next City Council Regular Meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 8 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall. The meetings are also broadcast live on Spectrum Channel 7, FayTV.net, and the FayTV app. Meeting agendas, supporting documentation, and minutes are available to the public on the city's website.
