(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The Fayetteville City Council held a special meeting Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers to discuss matters relevant to America’s “Can Do” city.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m., followed by invocation offered by Council Member Brenda McNair and Pledge of Allegiance led by Mayor Mitch Colvin.
Council Member D.J. Haire made a motion to Approve the Agenda, seconded by Council Member Derrick Thompson. The motion was approved unanimously.
Chief of Police Kemberle Braden presented information concerning requested topics by the City Council relevant to making an informed decision on a Youth Protection Ordinance proposal. The City Council discussed and deliberated the topic leading to the following actions:
- Council Member Courtney Banks-McLaughlin made a motion to:
- Reject the proposal as presented.
- Amend the ordinance to address the following council concerns:
- Truancy
- Age Limit
- Fine for parents/guardians
- Work with Community Partners to include but not limited to:
- Cumberland County
- Cumberland County Schools
- Cumberland County Sherriff
- Local Judges
- Local nonprofit organizations
- Create a Memorandum of Understanding stating the responsibilities of each partner.
- Council Member Shakeyla Ingram seconded the motion which PASSED 7-3. Mayor Pro Tem Johnny Dawkins and Council Members Deno Hondros and Mario Benavente opposed the motion.
