(Fayetteville, N.C.) – The City of Fayetteville Solid Waste Division begins enforcing policies in the updated solid waste ordinance on July 1.
The ordinance changes allow the Solid Waste Division to provide more consistent and efficient collection services to more than 15,000 residents daily. Notable changes affect weekly household waste and yard waste, every-other-week large limb collections and collections on private streets.
The City collects household waste in 96-gallon brown and/or green rollout carts and will collect up to two rollout carts each week. The 96-gallon blue rollout carts are for recycling only. The City will collect up to two blue rollout carts, if residents previously upgraded their 32-gallon rollout cart prior to the City distributing the new blue rollout carts.
Yard waste is collected in containerized items, to include: 96-gallon green and/or brown rollout carts, any 32-gallon can with a lid made of metal or plastic, durable plastic bags, and bundled or tied yard waste not to exceed 50 pounds. Bundled yard waste cannot exceed 3 feet in length or 3 inches in diameter. The City will collect up to 10 containerized items of yard waste each week. Yard waste containers can only include yard waste and will not be collected when mixed with any other waste items.
Large limb waste includes tree trimmings, large shrubbery and large limbs that aren’t more than 5 feet long and 6 inches in diameter, and in a pile no more than 10 cubic yards placed in an orderly manner along the curb 4 feet away from any other objects. Large limb waste is collected for free every other week. Residents can schedule a special pickup for materials over 10 cubic yards. A fee will be charged for this service.
The City is also examining private streets and roads to determine if they are a safety hazard for City staff and trucks. Residents living on these roads will be instructed to place their rollout carts at the end of the street or road on designated pickup days.
Bulky items collection will remain the same at 5 items every other week.
Crews will warn residents by placing a tag on collections items out of compliance. The RAPID (Removal and Prevention of Illegal Dumping) team will work with residents to educate and resolve compliance issues. A fine will be assessed to residents that do not correct compliance matters.
