City of Fayetteville issued the following announcement on May 3.
The City of Fayetteville’s top attorney, Karen McDonald, was selected for a position as an officer on the board of the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM).
Earlier this month, delegates presented a slate of officers who were formally announced on last Friday. McDonald, who was nominated to represent the North Carolina Association of Municipal Attorneys on the NCLM board, will bring the insight and perspective of a chief legal officer of a municipality. McDonald is currently the President of the North Carolina Association of Municipal Attorneys (NCAMA), a branch of NCLM.
“I am excited to share my perspective and experience with exceptional leaders across our state as we work to collectively serve the residents who call North Carolina's cities and counties home," McDonald said. "NCLM is a respected organization dedicated to public service and strengthening our municipalities. I look forward to my role in that process over the coming year."
NCLM is the leading organization in the state for staff, leadership and elected officials from North Carolina city and town governments. The organization offers career and risk management training opportunities, legislative connections and a platform for local government leaders to share expertise and experiences. Current Fayetteville City Council Member representing District 5, Johnny Dawkins, is currently a member of the NCLM Board of Directors.
McDonald is Fayetteville’s first African American and woman city attorney. She has served as city attorney in Fayetteville since 2002 after previously serving as the first assistant city attorney. Since coming to Fayetteville, she has grown her office to more than ten staff members who provide support to the various functions of City government as well as legal support services to the Fayetteville City Council.
“Karen broke barriers here,” Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin said. “She put in the hard work and late nights. She’s earned the respect and the listening ears of her peers and other local government professionals. I’m proud of her accomplishments and I look forward to how she will further represent Fayetteville and advocate for local government needs.”
