City of Fayetteville issued the following announcement on Apr. 25.
Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) Director Randy Hume received state-level recognition ahead of his planned retirement. Hume was recently honored with a North Carolina Public Transportation Association (NCPTA) Milestone Award. The Milestone Award recognizes retiring NCPTA members for their years of service and or exceptional service and duty to the Association.
Hume accepted the award at the NCPTA annual conference on April 12 before his planned retirement from FAST in July. With more than 40 years of service in the public transportation sector, Hume is a U.S. Navy veteran and was hired as the FAST Director in December 2010. In addition to Fayetteville, he served in Palm Springs, California, Detroit, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Memphis, Oklahoma City and Austin, Texas.
“This award signifies Randy’s dedicated service not only to passengers but to our entire City,” Fayetteville City Manager Doug Hewett said. “Randy has accomplished so much during his career, most recently managing the uncertainty of the pandemic and transition to cashless transactions. Dedicated to continual improvement, he rides the bus frequently to ensure excellence. We will miss his humility and leadership, but are proud of him and the foundation built for our continued success.”
One of the ambitious and transformative goals Hume set is for the FAST fleet to become all electric by 2040. In addition, he seeded the FAST partnership with Fayetteville Technical Community College, which he wants to see expand to train more transit operators.
Among his many accomplishments during his tenure is the planning and develop of the FAST Transit Center at Franklin Street which opened in 2017. Since opening, it has been used by more than 2 million passengers. Hume says developing the Transit Center and hosting a federal official to announce a grant for the Center, are among his favorite memories.
“I’ve been blessed with so many opportunities to serve passengers in Fayetteville and surrounding areas,” Hume said. “Along with my team, I’ve tried to prepare FAST for a bright future with new equipment and technology that will make public transit attractive and convenient for our customers.”
