City of Fayetteville issued the following announcement on Feb. 28.
Candidates can now apply for Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation (FCPR) Lead Lifeguard and Lifeguard positions online at fayettevillenc.gov. Lifeguards are needed at all four FCPR pools. Applicants must have valid American Red Cross certifications. FCPR offers the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification course, at no cost, to candidates who agree to work for FCPR during the summer season. The course spans four days. All of the training is in person: water and land rescue skills, first aid, CPR and AED instruction. Interested Lifeguard candidates should email Athletic Program Coordinator Elise Shank EliseShank@FayettevilleNC.gov or call 910-433-1395. Candidates will be required to take a drug test and undergo background screening.
At least 30 FCPR Lifeguards plan to return this season.
“I really enjoy working with kids which is something I’ve been doing since I was just a kid myself,” Lake Rim Aquatic Center Lifeguard Johnny Yerby said. “It feels rewarding because I remember being a kid splashing in the pool admiring all the lifeguards and wanting to become one when I was older and now, I am a lifeguard. It feels like I’ve accomplished a life goal.”
Yerby and others help year-round with Lifeguard classes and FCPR events. Photos from Saturday’s (2/19/2022) training session are available for download.
