Town of Hope Mills issued the following announcement on Feb. 24.
The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is aware that a sophisticated phone scam targeting citizens is currently circulating by mimicking the Health Department's main phone number, 910-433-3600.
The robocall claims to be the Cumberland County Department of Public Health delivering medical information. The Cumberland County Department of Public Health will never call and leave medical information in such a manner.
It is policy that CCDPH employees will:
1) NEVER provide a medical diagnosis or lab results via robocall.
2) NEVER provide a medical diagnosis or lab results without first identifying you as the patient or guardian.
3) NEVER ask for your social security number or payment via robocall.
If you believe these scammers have contacted you, don't hesitate to get in touch with Attorney General of North Carolina Josh Stein at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or (910) 716-6000. You can also contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-1500.
