City of Fayetteville issued the following announcement on Nov. 10.
The City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, and Sustainable Sandhills will host an Electronic Waste Drive on Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Cumberland County Courthouse. The hours of the event are 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Vehicles can enter the courthouse parking lot (117 Dick St.) at the entrance off of Otis F. Jones Pkwy.
America Recycles Day, which takes place every year on Nov 15, recognizes the importance and impact of recycling. The purpose of the e-waste drive is to help residents properly dispose of old or used electronic devices or accessories that could contain toxic or hazardous materials, such as arsenic and lead. Proper disposal can help eliminate the amount of e-waste at landfill sites. In addition, recycling electronics helps prevent the destruction of habitat and emission of greenhouse gases associated with mining raw materials such as iron, gold, palladium, platinum, and copper.
At the e-waste drive on Nov 20, volunteers will unload electronics from participants’ cars. Almost anything with a cord will be accepted at the event, including cell phones, tablets and chargers. Ink and toner cartridges will also be accepted. Items do not have to be in working condition. Please see below for a more extensive list of accepted materials.
The nonprofit Sustainable Sandhills will receive between $0.25 and $20.00 from the company Eco-Cell for each recycled mobile phone, tablet, smart watch, MP3 player, GPS, digital camera, and handheld gaming system that is recycled at the event. The nonprofit will receive $0.10 to $4.50 per recycled printer cartridge that can be accepted by Funding Factory. All other electronics from the event will be recycled at a cost by Cumberland County.
