City of Fayetteville issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.
On October 12, 2021, a U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) representative will facilitate a full-day event at Methodist University to receive feedback on repurposing the Market House. This will be the first of two events. The events will not be open to the public. Free-flowing, candid conversations will be encouraged among those who are present. The USDOJ and the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Commission formed a group to represent the community at the Oct. 12 event. They will do the same for the second event, which will be scheduled for early 2022. The feedback groups will prioritize at least three options for repurposing the Market House. The first group includes youth, adults, people of various racial/ethnic backgrounds, faith leaders, men, women, civil rights advocates and service providers.
On April 15, Fayetteville City Council members chose to repurpose the Market House, using the USDOJ City SPIRIT model to collect community input. You can read the April 15 Fayetteville City Council Special meeting minutes here.
“People have been discussing this for years,” Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Commission Chairwoman Semone Pemberton said. “I’m thrilled that the commission is part of this historic conversation. America’s Can Do City can set an example of unity on a sensitive topic that has not been addressed to this degree.”
Following each community input event, a report will be compiled on the feedback received. The information will be presented to the City Council at a date to be determined
