Fayetteville City Council discusses rezoning applications and FY2025 budget

The Fayetteville City Council convened on June 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers to discuss city matters. The meeting commenced at 6:45 p.m., following an invocation by Lionell Cartwright from Power of Christian Faith Church and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mayor Mitch Colvin and the City Council.

Three announcements and recognitions were made during the session. Mayor Colvin presented a proclamation to Fayetteville Pride President Krystal Maddox in honor of Pride Month, read another proclamation for Juneteenth, and Mayor Pro Tem Jensen honored Women Veteran’s Month with a proclamation.

City Manager Douglas J. Hewett informed that the City Manager newsletter is published weekly, encouraging residents to subscribe via the city’s website.

Councilmember Benavente moved to approve the agenda with an exception for Item 7.0A14, which was shifted to be discussed during 7.0B. The motion was seconded by Councilmember Courtney Banks-McLaughlin and approved unanimously (10-0).

The consent agenda, consisting of routine items passed with a single motion and vote, included several approvals such as meeting minutes from May 28, June 3, June 10, and June 12 sessions; various rezoning applications; bid recommendations; adoption of budget amendments; and changes to downtown parking hours. All consent agenda items were approved unanimously (10-0).

One item was pulled from the consent agenda regarding legal representation for city employees. The request was approved unanimously (10-0). Additionally, a motion to establish a sentinel review process passed (7-3), with opposition from Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Jensen and Councilmembers D.J. Haire and Thompson.

Public hearings addressed several issues including annexation petitions by Judd Brook 6, LLC and Cedar Creek Road, LLC; proposed amendments to the Hospital Area Overlay; and map amendments for properties on Cedar Creek Road. All motions related to these hearings were approved either unanimously or by majority vote.

Other business included adopting the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Ordinance documents which were also approved unanimously (10-0).

Administrative reports provided information on residential traffic management programs which will be reviewed in future work sessions.

The meeting adjourned at 9:22 p.m., with the next regular council meeting scheduled for August 12 at 6:30 p.m., preceded by a work session on August 5 at 2 p.m.
