If you’re thinking about adopting a dog or cat, you have a couple of days left to get one from the Cumberland County Animal Services municipal shelter without paying the usual adoption fees.
Elaine Smith, animal services director of the Fayetteville shelter, said the agency is waiving fees for the week.
“Animal Services periodically will request to waive adoptions fees from the County Manager for a variety of reasons,” Smith said in a WNCN report this week. “We had remarkable success in May when we waived adoption fees ahead of the first phase of a state mandated floor resurfacing project.”
Part of the reason for this week’s no-fee adoption drive is that road work has cut into the shelter’s housing capacity.
"As the resurfacing project continues, we will again temporarily lose a significant amount of housing capacity,” Smith explained. “We are also full of cats and kittens this time of year. We are hoping to adopt out as many pets as possible to loving homes to prevent having to potentially euthanize animals for lack of space.”
Pets from the shelter will be vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered. Adoption times at the shelter are scheduled for Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
