Fayetteville City Council discusses city matters in May 13, 2024 meeting

The Fayetteville City Council convened on May 13, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers to discuss matters pertinent to the city. The meeting was initiated with an invocation by Pastor Glen Meadows of Cedar Falls Baptist Church and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mayor Mitch Colvin and the City Council.

During the meeting, three announcements and recognitions were made. Mayor Colvin presented Fayetteville Police Chief Kemberle Braden, Daniel Terracciano, Fayetteville Police Foundation President, and Melissa Reid, Incoming Fayetteville Police Foundation Executive Director, with a proclamation recognizing National Police Week. Additionally, Mayor Colvin honored Ms. Sel Mpang, Program Director for North Carolina Asian Americans Together, with a proclamation for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Lastly, Kenneth Williams received a Certificate of Achievement from the mayor for his exemplary leadership skills throughout high school.

City Manager Douglas J. Hewett reported that residents could sign up to receive weekly newsletters via the city’s website where they can also find budget updates as the city enters its budget season.

The council approved an agenda motioned by Councilmember Derrick Thompson and seconded by Councilmember D.J. Haire (10-0). The public forum featured remarks from 11 individuals discussing various topics including support for an Office of Community Safety and changing paid parking times.

Council Member Mario Benavente moved to approve the consent agenda which included seven items; this motion was seconded by Council Member D.J. Haire and approved unanimously (10-0).

Staff reports included an audit report presented by Robbie Bitner from PBMares which was received unanimously (10-0). Public hearings considered closures of Carthage Drive and Joseph Street; both motions passed unanimously (10-0).

Other business included adopting the Recommended FY 2025 Strategic Plan presented by the Strategic & Performance Analytics Manager and Senior Corporate Performance Analyst. The council also heard a presentation on the Recommended Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Annual Operating Budget and set the Budget Public Hearing.

The meeting concluded with administrative reports, including the FY 2024 3rd Quarter City Council Scorecard, which was for informational purposes only. The meeting adjourned at 8:53 p.m. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m.
