The Fayetteville City Council convened on January 22, 2024, to discuss various matters relevant to the city. The meeting began with a prayer by George Coney from the House of Prayer COGIC, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mayor Mitch Colvin and the City Council.
During the meeting, several announcements and recognitions were made. Senator Val Applewhite presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award to Dr. Toney Coleman. Mayor Colvin also extended an invitation to faith leaders and community partners to engage in a dialogue regarding youth and other community concerns.
City Manager Douglas Hewett provided a report, acknowledging and thanking council members who attended the service awards for city employees. He highlighted Selena Washington, an Athletic Program Coordination in the Parks and Recreation Department, who celebrated 40 years of service with the City of Fayetteville. Hewett also mentioned the upcoming City Council Annual Retreat scheduled for January 29-30, 2024, and encouraged residents to sign up for the City Manager newsletter published weekly on the city's website.
The council proceeded to approve the agenda and the consent agenda, which consisted of 11 routine items passed with a single motion and vote. Council Member Derrick Thompson moved to approve the consent agenda, and it was unanimously approved.
The council also discussed the 2024 Federal Action Plan, which was unanimously adopted following a motion by Council Member Thompson and a second by Council Member Mario Benavente.
During the meeting, two public hearings were held. One focused on the conditional rezoning of 1.42 acres from Mixed Residential 5 to Heavy Industrial, while the other addressed a rezoning from Single Family Residential 10 to Single Family Residential 6. Both items were tabled until February 2024.
Additionally, an evidentiary hearing was conducted regarding a Special Use Permit for a duplex at 1040 Stamper Road. This item was also tabled until February 2024.
In other business, Council Member Haire moved to table an item until January 31, 2024, during a special meeting, and this motion was unanimously approved.
The meeting concluded with administrative reports, including the submission of the Fiscal Year 2024 Second Quarterly City Council Scorecard and a demolition update for properties at 901 Person Street and 4903 Murchison Road.
The next work session is scheduled for February 5, 2024, and the next regular meeting will be on February 12, 2024. Both meetings will take place in Council Chambers in City Hall and will be broadcasted live on Spectrum Channel 7, FayTV.net, and the FayTV app.
