FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – McFadyen Drive is scheduled to close from Jan. 8 to March 8 for maintenance to the Devonwood Lower Dam. The necessary maintenance, required by North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), include the installation of a chimney drain at the downstream toe of the dam and clearing the vegetation prior to impounding water.
Message boards were installed this week to alert motorists about the road closure. Alternate access routes to points beyond the road closure include Tollhouse Drive, located half of a mile west on Morganton Road, or Evanston Street, three-quarters of a mile west on Morganton Road.
The city of Fayetteville has contracted with Morgan Trucking & General Construction Inc. to complete the work on the dam. These maintenance activities are required by NCDEQ to ensure the dam is in compliance with current state codes and standards.
The impact from Hurricane Matthew damaged the Devonwood Lower Dam and McFadyen Drive in October 2016. Since then, the city has stabilized the dam, constructed a new spillway and rebuilt McFadyen Drive. This construction was completed in October 2022.
