Plans for the North Carolina Civil War & Reconstruction History Center got a $6.6 million boost from the city of Fayettteville, meaning it’s one step closer to achieving its vision in the city.
"We all have to trust each other that the real stories and the hard stories will be told and I have to give credit to the city council and the board that has done this because they have been at the table for the better part of two years to iron out the details and make sure we don't make a mistake with this,” council member Kathy Jensen told WTVD.
The site will be affiliated with the Museum of Cape Fear Historical Complex. It is planned for a spot on Arsenal Avenue near downtown. The Fayetteville City Council set aside the money for it during its Monday session. One of the stipulation concerns how stories about the era will be presented.
While the museum will be run by the state once it's completed, the city will get a seat on the board.
The center has solicited public opinion about its project this month, with a couple of displays and sessions at various spots around town.
