HOKE COUNTY SCHOOLS: Names New Assistant Superintendent Of Human Resources

 Hoke County Schools issued the following announcement on Apr. 15.

 Hoke County Schools has announced that Shawn O’Connor will serve as the district’s new Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources. The Board of Education approved the selection during their meeting on April 12, 2022.  He will replace Dr. Donna Thomas, who is moving to the coast next month.  O’Connor currently serves as the district’s Director of Testing, Accountability, and Student Information Systems.

“I am grateful to the Hoke County Board of Education and Superintendent to have the opportunity to serve the students and families of Hoke County in this new capacity,” O’Connor shared. 

O’Connor graduated from Miami University with a degree in Business Management focusing on Human Resource Management in 2001.  He began his career in the corporate world in human resources and sales  He returned to school where he received his education license from the University of Akron in 2004 and went on to serve as a high school teacher in Ohio.  

This is O’Connor’s sixteenth year in education in North Carolina.  He began his career in North Carolina with Cumberland County Schools as a 7th-grade teacher at Hope Mills Middle School.  He later went on to serve as the Assistant  Principal/Athletic Director at Luther Nick Jeralds Middle School in Fayetteville.  For the past nine years, O’Connor has worked for Hoke County Schools beginning as the Assistant Principal at Sandy Grove Middle School, then Principal of Rockfish Hoke Elementary School, and currently the Director of Testing and Accountability.   Since coming to Hoke County, O’Connor has been awarded Principal of the Year in 2017-18, was recognized as a Patriotic Employer by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, has been a two-time presenter a the National High Schools That Work conference, and was a featured presenter for the NC Principal READY Program.  O’Connor also holds a Master's Degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.  

“Mr. O’Connor’s leadership skills and high-quality work experience make him an excellent candidate for the Human Resources position,” Superintendent Dr. Debra Dowless expressed.  “He will continue to be an asset to our team and our community.”
