A military spouse is giving new meaning to the term “boots on the ground.” Although the term generally refers to deploying soldiers into a war zone, Elizabeth Hammond is collecting used footwear to send to Ukrainians.
"If you're going to wear them all the time, then they need to be comfortable,” Hammond told ABC11, speaking of how used boots are already broken in and so can be worn for long periods of time with less discomfort.
Why is she doing this? Well, to put it simply, she said she can relate to their situation.
“I have not personally been inside a war zone, but I do know what it is like to have someone I love to be sent into a war zone,” Hammond said.
It’s a mission with a purpose, and that makes her feel like she’s accomplishing a worthwhile task.
"This is just very meaningful to me as a woman and as a mother,” the mother of five said. “A community filled with people who care deeply about fighting for freedom. We still are a part of something so beautiful over here in the United States and we can take that for granted because we have a democracy that people over there are willing to die for."
Hammond told ABC she is calling on the rest of the military community to help in the efforts to help Ukrainians as Russian forces continue to invade their country.
The boots can look ragged and dusty, but having a good sole is key, so they’ll last a while.
