A Republican lawmaker said the General Assembly's approval of a recovery program saved thousands of jobs that likely would have been lost because of COVID-19 fallout.
Rep. John Szoka (R-Cumberland) made his comments in a Facebook post on Aug. 17, highlighting legislative he and other lawmakers supported to help small businesses.
The Rapid Recovery Loan Program provided approximately $125 million that was distributed to small business owners in need, he said on Facebook. The program's funding came from the $1.5 billion North Carolina relief package lawmakers approved.
The loan program, according to statistics Szoka posted to Facebook, supported nearly 1,000 businesses, with 98% of funding going to businesses with less than 50 workers. It also reported that 64% of funding went to minority- or female-owned businesses and that overall it saved nearly 6,400 jobs.
"This program successfully provided emergency funding to businesses on the brink of closing, saving thousands of jobs and hundreds of businesses,” Szoka said on his Facebook page.
