(Fayetteville, N.C.) – The Fayetteville History Museum is partnering with the Lafayette Society to host a Birthday Bash for Fayetteville’s namesake, Marquis de Lafayette, on Sept. 9 from Noon to 2 p.m. at Cross Creek Park, 213 Green St.

Commemorative festivities are planned for the event and General Lafayette will join the party around 1 p.m. for cupcakes and ice cream. The event is for all ages and free to the public.

Lafayette, a famous Frenchman, fought with America’s Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. He progressed to the rank of Major General under General George Washington’s tutelage, notably leading Continental Forces to victory in the battle at Yorktown in 1781.

In 1783, the community that encompassed Cross Creek and Campbellton was renamed Fayetteville to honor Lafayette. Fayetteville was the first city in America named for the Revolutionary War hero and the only city named for him that he visited during his grand tour of 1824-1825.
