When you talk about well-rounded, consider Demetria Davis, a Fayetteville woman who is a mother of five, grandmother, pastor, and caretaker.

That’s the mix it took to win the title of North Carolina’s Mother of the Year in 2022.

“This just really means a lot for our family, because it’s not just me; they helped me be mother of the year,” Davis told ABC11. “My husband, my kids help me be mother of the year, so I would just say keep being your authentic self.”

The award is sponsored by American Mothers, Inc. and has been awarded since 1935. The organization’s website said its mission is “to recognize mothers and their positive impact in their families and communities through the historic, annual Mother of the Year award.”

Davis is a native of Fayetteville who earned a track and field scholarship to the University of South Carolina. She traveled the world as a professional athlete and garnered athletic company endorsements. She earned a gold medal as part of the 4×400 meter relay team in the 2003 World Championships in Paris.

Currently, she is a private chef and caterer who operates Dee’s Champion Cuisine, the American Mothers website said.

Davis will represent North Carolina at a convention in April, where she will compete against all of the other states’ winners for National Mother of the Year.
