City of Fayetteville issued the following announcement on Dec. 2.
The City of Fayetteville has a key player at the table to negotiate and advocate for U.S. military service members. Governor Roy Cooper appointed Fayetteville Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Jensen to the North Carolina Military Affairs Commission (NC MAC). Jensen will serve a two-year term on the Commission. Her appointment began in September and she participated in the quarterly Commission meeting last week. Fayetteville surrounds Fort Bragg, and is home to North Carolina Veterans Park and the U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum.
Jensen is a Public Member of the NC MAC. She will assume a specialized role within one of the Commission’s four committees: Base Sustainability & Community Affairs, Legislative Affairs, Quality of Life and Economic Development. The Commission provides advice, counsel and recommendations to the Governor, state lawmakers and state agencies on programs and legislation that continues and increases the role of North Carolina’s military installations.
“Now is a great time to raise issues important to our current service and National Guard Members,” Jensen said. “The spotlight is on Fayetteville as we move forward to develop a sports complex with Fort Bragg. The complex will attract people from near and far. We also anticipate Fort Bragg’s renaming. Additionally, our service members returned from Afghanistan this year. There are more active duty soldiers at Fort Bragg compared to any other installation across the U.S. Army.” Jensen says she will work to multiply City partnerships with other agencies to prioritize military interests. She wants to find ways to keep veterans in North Carolina.
Jensen was born and raised in Fayetteville and owns a local business. She is married to Ret. Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Jensen. This year, she served as Emcee at the City of Fayetteville’s Veterans Day Ceremony, Moderator for Fort Bragg’s Renaming Virtual Town Hall and she was a featured speaker at the City’s Army Birthday Celebration. Jensen says the connections she made at those events are valuable. She looks forward to the next NC MAC meeting in February.
